The Emancipation of Kinky Haired Girls is a project by Patrick Gandy which consists of a coffee table book of digital still photographs. The book is accompanied by a DVD of the stills, and live action digital video, and original chamber music all woven together to create a multidisciplinary work celebrating the strength and beauty of the black female nude. The subjects were carefully selected and all possess strength, character, presence and an artistic temperament that make them beautiful in an organic way. They are not post-pubescent girls, they are women in their 30's, 40's and 50's who know themselves and know their world and are not afraid to express themselves both verbally in the clothed interview segments and via the physical expression of their nude form.
